At birth, babies' lungs are filled with fluid from being in the womb. While babies “practice” breathing in utero, they don't use their lungs for breathing.
Within about 10 seconds after delivery, their lungs immediately transition to be filled with air. This breath sounds like a gasp, as the newborn's central nervous system reacts to the sudden change in temperature and environment. This connection is one of the most intricate things the body does; providing oxygenation within the first few minutes of life to stimulate the brain, kidney, endocrine, and digestive systems.
